Amgen Foundation Donates $500,000 To Aid In Southern California Wildfire Relief Efforts

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (Oct. 25, 2007) -The Amgen Foundation today announced that it is providing cash contributions totaling $500,000 to support those affected by the devastating fires throughout Southern California and has established a company-wide disaster relief program.

The After-the-Fires Fund at the San Diego Foundation and the Southern California Wildfire Relief Fund at the California Community Foundation will each receive $150,000. Direct Relief International and the American Red Cross will each receive $100,000. The Amgen Foundation funds will support activities that include the following:

  • After-the Fires Fund supports emergency response, recovery and rebuilding efforts in the fire ravaged communities. The primary focus is ongoing recovery and rebuilding throughout the San Diego region.
  • Southern California Wildfire Relief Fund will aid intermediate recovery needs with a particular focus on needy populations, those in need of affordable housing and nonprofits serving the affected areas.
  • Direct Relief International is operating an extensive statewide clinic program in collaboration with community health centers and free clinics to ensure access to healthcare services and supplies. Direct Relief is also providing personal care items for use by evacuees.
  • Funds to the American Red Cross will assist in the distribution of water and food to firefighters and emergency workers in the affected areas.

In addition, the Amgen Foundation will deploy its Disaster Relief Program Web site for Amgen staff around the globe who wish to contribute their own funds to designated organizations aiding in relief and rebuild efforts. The Amgen Foundation will match staff contributions dollar for dollar via this relief site.
