The Amgen awards honor public or private school science teachers, grades K-12, who demonstrate outstanding science teaching and have a great impact on the lives of their students. This is the first year that the Amgen Award has been given in Washington state. Each teacher will receive an unrestricted $10,000 award at a dinner event in May. • Mary Glodowski, Juanita High School, Kirkland: (425) 823-7600

• Mary Margaret Welch, Mercer Island High School, Mercer Island: (206) 236-3350

Nominations are made by submitting a form and/or letter to Amgen describing why the teacher should be recognized for science teaching expertise. Nomination forms were published in newspapers, posted on Amgen's web site, and press releases were widely distributed.

A panel of three independent judges selected the winners. Judges based their decisions on evidence of the recipients' creativity and effectiveness in the classroom; their application and development of best practices in science education; their motivational ability; and their mastery of the subject matter and instructional skill.
