THOUSAND OAKS, Calif., April 22, 2002 - Amgen (NASDAQ:AMGN), has announced the five science teachers in California who are this year's recipients of the Amgen Award for Science Teaching Excellence. The Amgen awards honor public or private school science teachers, grades K-12, who demonstrate outstanding science teaching and have a great impact on the lives of their students. Each teacher will receive an unrestricted $10,000 cash award at an awards dinner on May 9 at the California Science Center, in Los Angeles.

The 2002 winners are:

  • Richard Buck, of Louisville High School, in Woodland Hills: (818) 346-8812.

  • Craig Fox, of Redwood Middle School, in Thousand Oaks: (805) 497-7264

  • Carol Fujita, of Rio Mesa High School, in Oxnard: (805) 278-5500

  • Juanita Ryan, of Toyon Elementary School, in San Jose: (408) 923-1965

  • Rachel Tenenbaum, of Scripps Ranch High School, in San Diego: (858) 621-9020

Nominations are made by submitting a form and/or letter to Amgen describing why the teacher should be recognized for science teaching expertise. Nomination forms were published in newspapers throughout California, posted on Amgen's web site, and press releases were widely distributed.

A panel of three judges, university educators in science and education, selected the winners. Judges based their decisions on evidence of the recipients' creativity and effectiveness in the classroom; their application and development of best practices in science education; their motivational ability; and their mastery of the subject matter and instructional skill.

In addition to the California program, the Amgen Award for Science Teaching Excellence is granted in Boulder County, Colorado; Jefferson County, Kentucky; and Juncos, Puerto Rico, locations where Amgen has facilities. For the last 10 years, Amgen has conducted regional awards programs for teaching, but this is the first year the awards have focused solely on science teaching.
