Amgen Announces Award for Science Teaching Excellence in California

A Statewide Call for Nominations Nominations Deadline: February 29, 2004
THOUSAND OAKS, Calif., Jan. 5 -- Amgen Inc. (Nasdaq: AMGN), the world's largest biotechnology company, today announced it has begun accepting nominations for the 2004 Amgen Award for Science Teaching Excellence in California, the company's statewide recognition program for science education. Five K-12 educators who work in either public or private schools in California will each receive an unrestricted $10,000 award from Amgen, and statewide recognition, at a special award ceremony in Los Angeles in May.
Amgen developed its teaching award in Ventura County 12 years ago. More recently, the company broadened the award program to include teachers throughout the state, and focused solely on those who teach science. Amgen also conducts similar programs in Colorado; Louisville, Kentucky; Boston and Cambridge, Massachusetts; Puerto Rico; Rhode Island; and Seattle, Washington.
Anyone can nominate an educator who teaches science. The nomination letter should include: the full name of the teacher; the name and address of the school; the name of the school district; the school's phone number; the grade level taught by the science teacher; the nominator's relationship to the science teacher; the nominator's phone number; and a description of why the science teacher deserves the award, including the teacher's attributes in the areas of creativity, effectiveness, best practice development, and instructional and motivational ability.
Letters should be sent to: Amgen Award for Science Teaching Excellence, Attn: AnNette Chavez, Amgen Inc., One Amgen Center Drive, Mailstop 38-3-B, Thousand Oaks, CA 91320-1799. Nominations can also be submitted electronically, at www.Amgen.com/ScienceTeacherAward/. Nominations for the award will be accepted immediately, through February 29, 2004.
